So, how do you save? By following what I call the book early or book late rule. Airlines attempt to fill as many seats as possible in advance. In fact, sometimes (or even most of the time) they over sell a flight to make sure they can maximize their dollar value per person. This is where the book early rule comes into play. If you can book your flight in advance, you can save anywhere from 10-30%. Sometimes you can save even more. Especially with airlines like Southwest (Southwest.com) and Airtran, both of which offer flights occasionally as low as $29 per person (select cities, times and other rules apply of course!)
But what do you do if you need to catch a last minute flight? You follow the Book Late Rule of course. Airlines will broker out their remaining seats to auction houses, such as Priceline.com, in an attempt to fill any remaining. So one way you can save as much as 60% (and maybe even more) is by waiting until the night before or even the morning of the day you’d like to travel and bidding. The way this works is you bid the absolute top dollar you’re willing to pay, and the airline will either accept or decline your offer. The best way to do this is to bid around 50% of the going rate on flights. This price will get accepted MOST of the time. But be careful with your bids, many times you are only allowed to bid once per 24 hours. If you have friends or family traveling too (as long they have a separate credit card) one person can bid for both seats at 60-75% off the normal rate. If that gets declined then you can purchase the seats at 50% off. Also, it’s important to keep in mind that if your offer is accepted, your credit card will be immediately charged, so make sure if you are using the trick above you wait until one offer is rejected.
